XS Receives IB World School Accreditation
On 30 January 2010, Fr. Johnny Go, received official notice from the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) headquarters in Geneva authorizing Xavier School to offer the IB Diploma Programme beginning school year 2010 - 2011.
IBO Director General, Jeffrey R. Beard, congratulated the school for what he described as a “significant accomplishment” and welcomed Xavier School as an official IB World School in the growing IB community worldwide. The authorization was achieved after four years of careful study and hard work, and included several assessments and visits by the IB Regional Office.
With this program, Xavier School is taking another significant step towards internationalization by offering a globally recognized curriculum to selected third year and fourth year high school students. In its initial years, the IB Diploma Program is envisioned to be an enriched program that benchmarks the students’ performance against international standards. The program, which entails regular teacher training overseas, will involve a much desired shift to a more student-centered approach in the classroom. Its goal, after all, is to form a 21st-century learner who is disciplined, synthesizing, creative, respectful, and ethical.
Prior to these IB efforts, Xavier School has been raising its standards by benchmarking internationally through the iPSLE (International Primary School Leaving Exam of Singapore) for the Grade School and the PSAT (Preliminary SAT of the US College Board) in the High School.
Through other international standardized achievement exams, Xavier students have been benchmarked with counterparts belonging to one grade higher, so that third and fourth year students are now comparable to Grade 11 and 12 students.
What’s in store for the Xavier IB student?
The Diploma Program offers a rigorous two-year pre-university curriculum designed especially for highly motivated third year and fourth year students. Initially, the Xavier IBDP program will offer the following subjects: English, Mandarin, Business and Management, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry. Students have the option to enrol a subject as a higher level or a standard level course. Crucial to the curriculum are three unique IB core subjects:
•  Theory of Knowledge (TOK): reflection on ways of knowing in the different disciplines and discussions of relevant knowledge issues;
•  Creativity-Action-Service (CAS): extra-curricular experiences that include arts activities, athletics, and social service activities; and
•  Extended Essay (EE): an independent research on a freely-chosen topic
In the next five years, Xavier School plans to expand the number of courses in the sciences, as well as in the humanities such as Psychology, History, Economics, including the Visual Arts and Music. Furthermore, the Board of Trusteeswould like to make this accessible to as many qualified Xavier students as possible. For this reason, Xavier School will be offering the most affordable IB Diploma Program in the country.
