Unique Scouting Experience

by Ms. Karina Palmero, Gr. 2 Class Adviser

dsc03397.JPG September 7 and 14, 2007 were marked as special dates on the calendars of the grade 2 students and their parents. Weeks of preparation by the students as well as the Kawan Leaders finally paid off as the parents witnessed and participated in the Kab Scout Investiture held at the MPC.
dsc03359.JPGParents and visitors started filling the MPC before 1 P.M. All were excited for the arrival of the Kab Scouts. As the Scouts assembled outside the venue, cameras kept on flashing everywhere. The excited scouts waved endlessly to their parents. The excitement settled down as soon as the scouts started marching inside the MPC singing the song, “Scouting ang Sandigan.”

dsc03400.JPGThe students were disciplined as they listened to the guest speakers, Mr. Marc Magsalin, Science Department Chairperson for the first batch and Mr. Jose Rizal Pangilinan, the Secretary General of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, for the second batch. The highlight of the ceremony was the placing of the neckerchief by the parents around their sons’ necks. The Scouts wore their neckerchiefs proudly until the end of the ceremony.

pictures-165.jpgAfter the investiture, the students feasted on pizza and juice for their merienda. Some parents even bought more food for their sons. When the students were done eating, they proceeded to their respective classrooms for a special class activity. Little did the students know that they will be exhausting their voices in a class practice for their Kawan Yell. The Kawan Leaders had to gather all their creativity to come up with an impromptu cheer for their respective kawans. All the participants showed their enthusiasm in showcasing their yells and cheers which ranged from unique attention-getting gimmicks, to lively marching beat, to even funny lyrics for each cheer.

dscn2199.JPGImmediately after the class activity, the scouts went down to participate in the flag retreat. The parents watched proudly as the scouts followed the “Pugay Kamay na!” command. The scouts then proceeded to their respective bleachers to start the Twilight Camp. The highlight of this activity was when selected students officially opened the campfire. All the scouts then participated in dscn2223.JPGkawan activities such as the sports yell where the parents also played a special task, the magic presentation by Mr. Magsalin and Mr. Felix Pangan, and an interactive story with Mrs. Ellen Sudario. A group of volunteers who were trained by Ms. Tracy Arevalo, Ms. Aissa Andrade and myself even prepared a special dance number to the tune of “Makes Me Wonder.” “Kum Bah Yah”pictures-173.jpg was sung by the scouts as their closing prayer and the scout benediction was also done to signal the end of the camp.

Indeed, the investiture and the twilight camp were special events to remember for the scouts, their Kawan Leaders and also their proud parents.
