Jeric Teng from Class of ‘09 was named Rookie of the Year in this season’s UAAP basketball tournament. The UST standout posted 40.9 statistical points (SP) to win the award handily over second placed Mikee Reyes (UP), who registered 22.1 SPs.
In an impressive freshman performance, he averaged 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. Midway in the season, he found a 3-game purple patch, scoring 18, 20, and a personal high of 22 points. “Iba ang puso ng batang yan (Jeric). Alam namin na malaki ang maitutulong niya sa team nung kinuha namin siya,” said UST coach Pido Jarencio.
Jeric is the son of former PBA Player Alvin Teng, and is the elder brother of current Xavier King Stallion Jeron Teng. During his stint in the Tiong Lian Basketball League, where he and La Salle rookie Gab Banal led Xavier High School to the title, he won the MVP award. Jeric was also the recipient of the Rafael Cortina Athletics Award when he graduated from Xavier School.
Jeric is the second Xavier alumnus to win the UAAP Rookie of the Year Award. Woody Co (’06) of UP Diliman was the first Xaverian to win this honor. Congratulations Jeric!
