Health Concerns Prompt Class Suspension

Despite our best efforts to prevent the incidence of the virus in school, we have been notified of our first confirmed Influenza A(H1N1) case.  The Nursery student has received the needed medical treatment, and is now on his way to recovery.

While there has been no community-level transmission, an increase in absences has been observed the past week.  We have, therefore, been advised to take all the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus among our students and school personnel.

In conformity with the guidelines set by the Department of Health, classes will be suspended effective tomorrow (25 June) for the prescribed number of days.  Classes will resume on July 6, Monday.  All events scheduled on campus today until July 5 have also been canceled.

The suspension of classes, however, is no reason for us to suspend academic work.  Given the range of online tools available today, students will be provided online instruction on selected subject areas and assigned specific tasks, for which they will be held accountable when they report for classes on July 6.  Parents of our students in the lower grades are requested to assist their children as the need requires.

Be assured that assignments will not require the use of books and materials that may have been left in school.

For details of the online courses and assignments, students and parents are requested to check the Xavier School web page starting this coming Friday.  We hope that while the situation is less than ideal, the suspension of classes will not unduly disrupt the delivery of instruction.  I encourage our students and teachers to regard this situation as an opportunity to explore and train ourselves in alternative but equally effective ways of learning.

During this period of suspension, we urge our parents and students to continue to be vigilant in monitoring themselves of possible infection and to take all the necessary measures for their personal health and for the general welfare of the community.   Let us also pray for the recovery of those who have caught the flu.  Thank you very much.

Classes have been suspended and postponed. many trips has also been postponed and now many parents are taking their postponed leisure trips at long weekends like this. I really fear for more spread of virus.

Question for those without access or availability to internet at home. How will they be asked to do online homework if that option is not available to them? Also if the solution is to find someplace to go online then how will we know if it is safe and secure of A(H1N1 flu if it is in a public area?

Where are the home works?

To Jun Abaya: The confirmed case is a Nursery student. We have included this information in the announcement above.

To Christine Uy: The move to suspend classes is a guideline for schools getting their FIRST confirmed AH1N1 case–not for every single case we get. The school is just as unhappy about this disruption, but we are trying our best to do what we can given the constraints.

To H3 student: We are currently addressing the website’s capacity to handle heavy traffic. At the same time, teachers will be asked to post announcements via alternative (social networking) sites.

The online assignments will not require the use of books or materials left in school.

Is it possible to know what grade level the student with A(H1N1) is? so that students of that level can take extra precautionary measures. Or at least let us know if he’s from HS, GS or Prep/Kinder

It will be hard to give online homework to the students. They don’t have most of their books since most of them left their books in their lockers. Also, ELF and the Xavier website keeps crashing due to the traffic.

What is the year level of the student who caught the virus? It’s so that we would be aware of who caught it.

Why do you have to suspend classes just because of 1 student who has confirmed H1N1 virus? There is no guarantee that this will not occur again when the school starts on July 6. It’s like being in a vicious cycle. I believe and suggest that all school heads must have an emergency meeting with the CHED and DOH to really take a good look at this pandemic flu which is causing a lot of disruption to everyone. Since June-August is really flu and typhoon season, maybe the authorities should just consider really moving the resumption of school on September (just like in the States). At least by then, the typhoon and reainy season would be lesser and hopefully, the flu season would have passed. You have to realize that parents have already paid tuition to the school so that the school with its teachers will have the responsibility to teach the students in school. The way things are, the burden of teaching now is being thrown back to the parents which I believe is unfair.

Will the students be allowed to enter the school premises tomorrow to get their books stored in their lockers?

Hi! Just in case the XS site goes down again, may we request that XS send all homestudy coursework to level and class reps to be forwarded to parents in their respective classes or at least have a back-up site/link in Facebook or somewhere…
Thanks!

Suggestion:
If it is possible when school resumes, can I request that anyone who enters the school campus (students, faculty and staff, guards, etc…) must wear masks to prevent the spread of the A(H1N1). Just like the imigration officers in the airport they wear masks from the start of work until they finish their shift.

What I am really worried about is that the huge traffic of people checking the announcements more often than not, crashes the website altogether. For 2 hours after the Classlistings were posted, numerous people were complaining about an “Error establishing database connection.” I hope this will be fixed before friday or it may be a problem when the online instructions are given.

Thank you.

In case that homeworks will be assigned thru the internet, how can we get the books that the teachers asked the students to leave in the classrooms yesterday?

Katrine said,

Suspension of class is a good thing , not to spread the virus.
my son was absent this monday and tuesday due to coughing and allergy(asthma). I had him checked by our family doctor and his pedia last saturday and said it is viral, nothing to worry and not flu.I wanted him to go to school yesterday since, he missed a lot of lessons already. but my husband insist on letting him rest for a full recovery.

is the school free to divulge what grades or year levels was/were the confirmed case/cases? this will greatly assist us parents to evaluate the degree of probable exposure of our children. of course i don’t expect the school to divulge names nor do i find the need for them but finding out the grade and year level will be greatly appreciated by parents in whatever way. thanks
