The Coca-Cola Tigers Champions Basketball Clinic was successfully held last Wednesday, 18 July 2007 at the quadrangle-level courts of the Fr Rafael Cortina Sports Center. A project of the Coke Healthy and Active Lifestyle Campaign, the free basketball clinic was participated in by 60 Xavier students.
Mr. Hercules Callanta, Dean of the College of Human Kinetics of University of the Philippines, Diliman, who also heads the Healthy and Active Lifestyle Campaign, and Coach Eric Altamirano led a pool of Coach E Basketball Academy coaches who taught the participants basic basketball drills and skills.
Philippine Basketball Association players from the Coca-Cola Tigers team who graced the event were William Antonio, RJ Rizada, Mike Gavino and Xaverian Joseph Yeo(XS 2001) who is the first Xavier alumnus to play professionally in the PBA.
A free-throw shootout, open to all those who wanted to participate, was conducted before the start of the clinic. This attracted a long line of students vying for the prize awarded for two consecutive free throws. The clinic participants were given a basketball, a training jersey and a certificate of attendance each. The event also featured a lay-up contest, autograph-signing, and a session for participants to pose for photographs with the Coke players.
