Updates from the HS-LRC

Book Selection 03Just before the school year began, the High School Learning Resource Center (HS-LRC) held the Book Selection and Book Weeding activities, which are both geared towards the improvement and upgrading of the HS-LRC collection.
Weeding Out Old Books
by Mrs. Sarah Elizaga, HS Librarian

As the entire community utilized the final stretch of summer, the High School Learning Resource Center conducted its annual weeding, a process involving the systematic removal of non-core volumes from the primary collection of the LRC.  While many libraries do not practice this on a regular basis, the HS-LRC believes that this will help in maintaining and updating the collection.

Armed with old books, weeding posters, pens and evaluation sheets, the library personnel invited the members of the HS community to help in choosing which books can already be removed from the present collection.

Book Selection 02The weeding could only be done after the librarians identified and removed the worn-out and outdated books from the shelves so that teachers could evaluate the materials.

For several days, books taken from the shelves of the Reference Section, the Teachers’ Collection, and the General Collection were displayed for evaluation. These were considered for final weeding depending on the teachers’ recommendations after the evaluation period.

Subject teachers from different departments stormed the library in this week-long event, which was launched last May 28, 2007.  Some of the books were weeded out since new editions exist in the collection. Others, on the other hand, were still kept due to their usefulness to the departments.

In this light, the HS LRC wishes to thank all the teachers who took part in this activity. Mrs. Ruth de Luna and her staff hopes that everyone will continue to support the HS-LRC in all its endeavors in improving the library collection.

Book Selection 03
The HS-LRC holds books and AV materials selection twice a school year, and the first one took place last May 31, 2007.  The HS Middle Level Administrators, including the HS-LRC head and the Assistant Principal for Academics, participated in the process.  As in previous years, the activity aimed to scout for references for student and teacher use.

Before the book selection, a list of available resources which had been purchased last school year was provided to the department/office heads. This was done to give the department heads an idea of their collection.

Through this activity the HS LRC believes that more students will greatly benefit from using library resources as these are updated and enriched on a regular basis.
