Chiang Kai Shek maintains Tiong Lian Lead

Xavier firm on number two spot

by Henry L. Liao(XS ‘72)

Man-mountain Justin Chua collected 26 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks in just three quarters of action as reigning Juniors Division titlist Chiang Kai Shek improved its record to 4-0 with an easy 98-70 victory over erstwhile unblemished Uno High School Friday night (Jan. 25) in the 32nd Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association tournament at the Uno Gym.

In the opening game of a doubleheader, Xavier School downed host Saint Jude Catholic School, 95-58, to pick up its third win in four outings and secure a share of the No. 2 spot with Uno.

The Golden Stallions never trailed throughout the 40-minute contest, leading 51-24 at halftime and enjoying an advantage of as much as 36 points, 60-24, early in the third quarter. Acrobatic forward Jeric Teng knocked in 31 points, hardworking Gabriel Banal had 17 points and 10 boards and steady guard Robin Tan finished with 14 markers.

With solo second place at stake, the Golden Stallions and Uneans go up against each other Saturday night (Jan. 26, 6:30 p.m.) in the main game of another doubleheader at the Uno Gym.

Chiang Kai Shek seeks its fifth straight win – and 14th in a row since last season – when the Blue Dragons take on St. Stephen’s High School (1-2).

Hope Christian High School (0-3) and Grace Christian High School (0-4) are the other teams in the seven-school competitions. The two winless squads face each other on Wednesday night (Jan. 30, 5:30 p.m.). In the main game that day, Uno tangles with Saint Jude (2-2).
