Xavier Grabs Faculty and Staff Interschool Badminton Championship
The Xavier School faculty and staff badminton team took home top honors at the 2007-2008 Faculty and Staff Athletics Association of Private Schools (FASAAPS) badminton tournament completed at the Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI), Makati gymnasium last November 24.The competition featured a men’s-doubles, women’s-doubles, and mixed-doubles format where two wins would clinch the tie for a school’s team.At the end of the round-robin eliminations held last September 29, Xavier School found itself in a first-place tie with the DBTI, Makati team, thus requiring a rubber match to decide the top seed in the semifinals.In the continuation of hostilities last November 24, the Xavier shuttlers took their rubber match against DBTI, Makati to earn first seeding in the semis, where the fourth-seeded Miriam team awaited.In the semifinals, Xavier School got a scare when the Miriam men’s doubles team won the first match of the series, but Joey Villamayor and Hope Ocampo outclassed Miriam’s women’s doubles team to even the series at one each. Then, in the deciding mixed doubles event, Adrian Asis and Hope Ocampo produced a gutsy performance to take Xavier School to the finals.In the championship series, Xavier’s men’s doubles team (Noel Calamungay and Wendell de Ocampo) and its women’s doubles team (Thet de Leon and Joey Villamayor) gloriously repeated over DBTI, Makati to clinch the title for Xavier School.The other Xavier FASAAPS Badminton team members who competed in the eliminations were Dan Gonzalez, Julio Mogote, Tom Sandico, Jane Agcaoili, Pam Lazaro, and Marge Castaneda.
